We have seen a couple of games where United's midfield struggled to create enough real chances for the strikers, and although we got a point against Sunderland, O'Shea's cross and Berbatov's finish were both top quality, and all three against Wolfsburg, a game in which Anderson and Carrick pulled the strings decently enough, and Nani and Valencia flattered to deceive on the wings. Although both have enormous skill, and the potential to be world class players, the pressure on United to challenge for all trophies, and to win as many points as possible, means we cannot afford to have many passengers in the side. Flashes of brilliance, spurts of speed, brilliant corners but otherwise questionable crosses, and dribbling runs that usually lead to goal kicks and defensive throw-ins are
not what's needed to achieve that end.
So much so I'd rather lose width across midfield and play 4 central midfielders so as to dominate possession and create chances with Barcelona-like passing and movement.
the energy, movement and passing ability of these four will overpower most, if not all midfields in the league, and utilizes all these players in their natural, most preferred positions. It allows Carrick and Anderson to play their passes into the feet of the strikers, and drift outside to cross when theirs space available. Fletcher does the job protecting the defense, pressuring opponents, passing the ball along to other midfielders and pinging long passes to Rooney and Berba. Park's interchange play and movement, along with his ability to pressure the opposition defenders and run at them from the wings, not to mention his 3rd-lung fitness will provide ample opportunity to score goals.
It also provides a flexibilty that allows us to then resort to a "normal" 4-4-2 pushing fletcher oout wide to the right, and Park left, or use Nani, valencia, Obertan, Tosic and saving the best for last, GIGGS off the bench. It also allows for rotational change, Giggs can play in the Park role, and Tosic has shown, both for our reserves, and for the Serbian U21 side, that he can play there as well. Any of Scholes, Gibson & Possebon can play in the central roles filled by carrick and anderson, and Hargreaves, or even O'Shea can play in the Fletcher role infront of defense. It'll also provide enough cover for Rio, who is undoubtedly regaining form and fitness, and cover the left and right wing-back area for when Evra powers forward on the left, or any of Brown, Rafael, Neville, Fabio or De Laet on the right.
